What's My Line?
« on: October 24, 2005, 05:25:08 PM »
Now when did the "Guess the mystery guest wrong and you're out" rule took effect and when did the Who's Who game first appeared?

Phew, I can finally understand this one---

1. I would want to say 70-71.
2. 1974.
There are three things I've learned never to discuss with people: Religion, politics, and the proper wrapping of microphone cables.

Sorry, my name's not Robert------he's just my webspace provider.

I did know, somewhat, that the "guess the mystery guest wrong and you're out rule" [Fates' Law, as it was known] was first imposed during Blyden's run.

Well, I remember when Bruner was hosting his third season, the Who's Who game got its first playing and not only that but the curtains go from blue to gold at the same time but Bruner's What's My Line? had its last regular sighting in October/November 2000 while Blyden's WML had its last regular sighting in March/April 2000 just before TPIR was taken off the schedule.

OK, so if you KNEW when Who's Who started, WHY did you ask us? That is just plain nonsense!

Can we create some sort of script to make this the standard reply to every iris post?

Because he/she/it isn't asking for information, he/she/it thinks they are asking clever trivia questions.

And everyone lines up to tell he/she/it so every time they post, in direct violation of the conventional logic: if they can't WRITE English, what makes you think they can READ it any better?

In the same way that we could just not bother replying.

I don't know which I find to be more distasteful - the occasional infantile posts or wrong information.

"Who's Who" started on WML on Wally Bruner episodes taped during the summer of 1971 for airing in the 1971-1972 season. I was among the first "Who's Who" contestants.

Hmm, that's very interesting. I apologize for my mis-information.

I'm not aware if GSN ever aired that particular season of not (what would have been Wally's last). Anyone know?

However, I'm 100% sure, and in fact I was watching the GSN repeats at the time, that somewhere in Blyden's first season was when you started hearing the famous phrase "face law prevails" during the intro of the mystery guest.

Fate's Law, actually, and you can actually thank Soupy Sales for that. It's just fascinating to watch an old show and you can basically tell when Soupy was gonna nail a mystery guest. Soupy was so good they needed something to give that part of the game some sort of risk factor. This was during the Blyden run that Gil Fates stepped in and added the rule that a wrong guess meant disqualification from the game. Otherwise Dana Valery would never get to play.

As far as I'm aware, GSN only aired the first syndicated season, and the last three.  They may have aired scattered episodes from the others, but they didn't appear regularly.

Here's a list of everything GSN has aired - it might be slightly outdated, but it will give you a good idea  (additions welcome).

I thought GSN had shown Monopoly in its entirety very early in the going.

AFAIK, Monopoly has never been shown in its entirety on GSN.
